Join us on Zoom Sunday, March 20 for the Mary Anne & Richard Cavicchi Christian Education Seminar: “I Want to Understand You”
Take a break from today’s environment of division. Unlike debate, which emphasizes convincing others to agree, in doing dialogue, you seek to mutually understand each other, even while differing.
Presenter: Mark Chupp, Jack Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences of Case Western Reserve University and founding director of Community Innovation Network.
Prof. Chupp will introduce the framework for doing dialogue on divisive issues. As an example, we will use this framework to engage with differing positions on the issue of unions from a teaching and a school administration perspective.
A representative of a Teachers’ Union and a Public School Administrator will present their differing positions. Then in small, safe Zoom breakout groups with a facilitator, we will use this framework to express our personal experiences and perspectives concerning unions, teaching, and administration while seeking to understand each other’s perspectives, and reflect and learn.
This will be a highly interactive session that opens with the pastors modeling dialogue on their differences on the Browns versus the Steelers. Participants will be invited to participate in a structured dialogue that honors each person’s perspective with respect and care. This approach will provide tools for people to use in their own relationships and communities.
Learn to engage one another, even if it is uncomfortable, be involved in working through it.
