The Director of Music is responsible for the oversight of the entire music program at Rocky River United Methodist Church and for the spiritually-intentional process of drawing RRUMC’s congregation into worship, and thus closer to God, through music.
This position guides the overall musical vision of the church through the various genres and styles of worship music present throughout the organization.
The Director of Music works collaboratively with the clergy and all members of the music staff to ensure the highest quality music possible is present at every service. The Director of Music also serves at the Chancel Choir Director and is responsible for programming, rehearsing, and directing the ensemble on a weekly basis from September to June.
Hours: 15 hours weekly, average
Salaried position: $26,600.00

QUALIFICATIONS:
A personal relationship with Jesus Christ, as evidenced by spiritual maturity and commitment to using music as a means of helping people meet Jesus Christ in the midst of their story
EDUCATION: A degree in music from an accredited university or equivalent work experience
Previous choral directing experience
A broad knowledge of sacred music repertoire across multiple genres and time periods
RESPPONSIBILITIES:
Organizing and directing weekly chancel choir rehearsals (traditionally held Wednesday evenings, 7:00- 8:30 PM) and additional rehearsals as necessary
Organizing and directing the Chancel Choir’s activities in the 10:00 AM Sanctuary Service each Sunday (September to June), as well as additional significant services (Christmas, Easter, Holy Week); scheduling and coordinating two Chancel Choir “Cantatas” during the church year (Lent, Advent); coordinating Summer Music Program, (July-August)
Overseeing organist, contemporary worship leader, 2 bell choir directors, Gifts of Music Program Committee, music staff, chancel choir section-leader-soloists, volunteer musicians, and other ensemble presentations in worship services; additionally, offering constructive feedback to the individual musicians and/or directors as needed, and acting as a support musician or substitute for other ensemble directors when necessary
Assisting in developing, promoting, supporting, and budgeting for all musical special events,
with emphasis on Gifts of Music Concert Series; this includes hiring guest musicians
Coordinating, maintaining, and growing the adult and youth church music programs with the
Senior Pastor, the Music Committee, and The Gifts of Music Program Committee, the Director of
Children’s Ministries, and Vacation Bible School staff, in keeping with the needs and desires of
the church and the community
Overseeing the maintenance and care of the instruments of the church
Coordinating with the church’s audio & visual engineers to ensure music is being captured,
broadcasted, and/or livestreamed at the highest quality
Coordinating with Senior Pastor and church office staff to ensure the music program’s
compliance with copyright and streaming rights
Other duties as assigned
WORK SKILLS: strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills; familiarity with the needs
of modest audio production for live sound; basic computer skills; knowledge of various music
software including typesetting (Finale, Sibelius, etc.) and audio production (Logic, Abelton, Protools,
etc.); basic knowledge of office tools
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: ability to move about the rehearsal and worship spaces and direct when
needed; accommodations as necessary can be made to suit the needs of the Music Director
WORK ENVIRONMENT: professional, business setting; business-casual attire preferred for worship
services, with robe worn during most traditional worship activities.
