John Newton wrote the world famous hymn, “Amazing Grace.”
He could only pen those words after he was able to see himself as a wretch in need of the saving grace of Jesus Christ. There is a reason for the ashes in the shape of the cross on Christian’s foreheads this Ash Wednesday. The ashes symbolize the fact that we wholly and completely realize that we are sinners. The cross symbolizes the fact that it is Jesus Christ and his suffering, death and resurrection that ultimately set us free from our own sinfulness. Ashes and the cross. It is a journey from the ashes of Ash Wednesday to the empty tomb of Easter Sunday.
